Wishes for Sons
i wish them cramps.
i wish them a strange town
and the last tampon.
I wish them no 7-11.
i wish them one week early
and wearing a white skirt.
i wish them one week late.
later i wish them hot flashes
and clots like you
wouldn't believe. let the
flashes come when they
meet someone special.
let the clots come
when they want to.
let them think they have accepted
arrogance in the universe,
then bring them to gynecologists
not unlike themselves.
Lucille Clifton
I picked this poem mainly because it was funny, and so true. I could imagine every woman feeling or having a few of these thoughts. When my friends and I get together we often discus men (which i figure most girls do) What usually comes up in conversation is how easy guys have it! this poem fits perfectly with those feelings.
I would not go so far as to say that men have it easy or easier than women, as they have their fair share of hard times too. They just go through things and experience things in a different way than we do, naturally.
ReplyDeleteWith that said though, I do like this poem. I have had my moments when a few of these thoughts ran through my mind.
This poem is interesting. I think that men would understand women if they had to go through some of the physical things that women go through, and vica versa. I think that this is a really good poem.
ReplyDeleteYou're so right, Deborah! There have been so many times that I thought, of my guy friends, "Man, I wish he could become a girl for just one day... a PMS day, hopefully!"
ReplyDeleteI really like this poem a lot. The use of "later," especially...it's an example of how one word can totally change the flow of a poem.
This poem was definitely funny. I doubt men could handle cramps and hot flashes. I really like the part when the narrator said "i wish them one week earlyand wearing a white skirt." Hilarious

ReplyDeleteI love this poem and I love Lucille Clifton's work. This poem is funny but to me it tells the truth. Men show experience the pain women go through, maybe they would understand us better.
